Joseph Slusky and Katie Hawkinson kick off the New Year at the Sun Gallery

The Sun Gallery is thrilled to kick off its 2012 Exhibition Season with "Interactions", an exhibition featuring the work of husband and wife team, Joseph Slusky (pictured right), and Katie Hawkinson.

These two artists live and work in Berkeley and have been exhibited nationally and internationally. The Sun Gallery is very proud to host a wide ranging exhibition featuring the luminous, beautiful paintings of Hawkinson, contrasting with the joyful and whimsical sculptures of Slusky. Both artists have a love of color and painterly surfaces and they have used the large scale of the Sun Gallery to isolate certain subjects in one area. The Ken Cook Gallery is themed for the stars and constellations, while the main open space forms an environment within which Slusky has clustered his sculptures, a colorful playground of welded metal.

Joseph Slusky has said about his own work: "The historic roots of this work are found in the cubist, constructivist and surrealist movements. The sculptures and drawings attempt to explore realms of the subconscious; it is the unknown that I'm concerned with. The premise is that within one, there are structures waiting to be excavated. The sculptures are like fossils- the imagination fossilized. The fascination and intrigue with the metal medium lies in its hardness and intransigence as contrasted with the more ephemeral human qualities of flesh and fluid. I do not work from models or sketches. I do not have or desire to have any preconceived idea about what the finished work will look like. Each work is a new exploration or journey."

Katie Hawkinson is inspired by nature, particularly the specific patterns of the natural and sacred geometry. Her studio is awash with light, color and texture (studio shot below), and this becomes apparent in her artwork - "Glow," oil on linen seen to the right.

The artist has written of his own work and art making process;

"As all things human-fashioned are invariably undone or unbecome in their journey back to the primordial, a subtle cosmological intent gets revealed. There is a great underlying mystery in the return pull to the primordial, not perhaps an actual intelligence, but a force that expresses itself in the very style in which all that's artificial must flow back into the sea of the pre-organized; atide receding, a tide reconvening. Far from random occurrences of rust, of peeling paint, fading and degradation, the great mystery of the return to the primordial is a process of communication, of dialogue; the etchings of decay -its very handwriting. There is remarkable order here, albeit not the order ofour world, or order in the realm of abstract understanding, but also not anorder subjugated to the superficial tyranny known as chaos either. Even nihilistic ideology as a human creation, eventually withers and is crushed by the ever-fixed pull of the great mystery to the primordia'

El Color Caliente is now open at the Sun Gallery

El Color Caliente de La Cultura is a riot of color at the Sun Gallery!!

Well, we worked all weekend to get the exhibition on the walls and it was well worth it. The show is full of some of the best work in the East Bay, showcasing artists who use color as a major element in their artwork, referencing and then spinning off Latin American influences.
Bellow, respectively, is the artwork (left to right) of Astrid Ramos, Barbara Rockholder (the postcard, thanks Debi Harrison, and to the left is the work of Michelle Ritchie.

Please come to the exhibition and explore a wide variety of creative explorations of the same theme. The exhibition opened on October 5th and will run through November 19, 2011, with an artists reception on November 5th featuring entertainment by Grupo Folklorico Tlapalli and others. A small donation will be requested to cover food and beverages and we all know the Sun Gallery hosts a really great celebration.

The Sun Gallery is proud to announce "El Color Caliente de la Cultura" - The Hot Colors of Culture, - an exhibition celebrating the dynamic colors and vision of Latin American artists and how these colors have infiltrated and informed the work of artists from other cultures.

This summer, two non-profit community galleries, The Sun Gallery, Hayward, and Hayward Arts Council at Cinema Place, proudly host the “Art of the Blues,” from June 8 - July 16, 2011. This multi-dimensional exhibit expands on the annual Hayward Russell City Blues Festival, now in its 12th year, held on the plaza at Hayward City Hall, July 9-10, 2011.

The “Art of the Blues” exhibition is a major collaborative venture between the two art organizations, and displays a significant joint curatorial effort. The exhibition features artwork that reflects both the musical and the emotional cadence of “The Blues.” Artwork is in all media and offers a glimpse into the historical past of the “The Blues,” and its association with the City of Hayward, as well as more contemporary reflections on the emotional resonance of “The Blues.”

Photo Phantom is a photographer's co-operative. Their aim is to share visions of the world through photographs. For more than twenty years the Photo Phantom has shown their work in galleries throughout the Bay Area.

Phantom photographers work with traditional film and silver gelatin prints, digital output, and alternative processes such as hand-coloring, bromoil, and cyanotypes. They work together finding shows and galleries in which to show our work.

George Asencio's collection of images is the culmination of years studying how light conforms to the human body. George is a Graduate of San Jose State's Photography Program. His work examines the play of light (specifically LED) as it wraps and skips across the human form.

The 22nd Annual Children's Book Illustrators Exhibit runs from February 9th - April 19th. The artwork above is by Kathryn Otoshi whose book, Maneki Neko, - The Tale of the Beckoning Cat, is one of nine featured books this year. Dr. Win is originally from Burma and his artwork mixes traditional Burmese symbols and iconography with images and ideas culled from around the world. His exhibition is entitled "Home is Where the Heart Is," and is a magical journey through the meaning of art and life. Dr. Win's a great philosopher about such things, so stop on by and see over 70 pieces of artwork in the Ken Cook Gallery.

Over 30 artists are participating in this colorful and lively show. You will find paintings in all mediums as well as sculpture, ceramics, glass, mosaic, collage and photography. See the gallery exhibit at your leisure, and then come back on Saturday, July 24, from 2-5, for an entertaining artist reception and pot luck fundraiser for the Gallery. The exhibit is free and open to the public at regular times.

For the reception/fundraiser, the admission will be $5 for adults, and $2 for kids.
Bring something edible and yummy to share. Musical entertainment will be provided by Frank and Ben Goulart, Dave Peterson, and Sir Lowell, otherwise known as The Fab Trio Plus One; also, Randy Carnefix on the keyboard, and perhaps surprise appearances by other local talent.

Sun Gallery has a way cool night installation featured right now. Artist Benny Alba has turned the smaller gallery into a big black box, then hung paintings about night inside. There's the moon, a foggy forest and street, and a rabbit in the moon to see, among others. Grab a flashlight from the entryway basket to see stars twinkle ... just like a camping trip. Written on the walls are quotes about night by famous folks; names you'll recognize. My favorite is by Vincent van Gogh but you'll have to figure out which one you like best as your flashlight beams above and below the paintings where the quotes are. Step into this room and remember what is so beautiful about night when you go camping only on this one it never rains and there's no air mattress to blow up! A fun time can be had by all.

This exhibit is open May 26 to June 19th during regular gallery hours.

It's Holiday Boutique Time! Come enjoy shopping at Sun Gallery from November 25 to Dec 23. We will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30-4:30pm, Fridays till noon-6pm.

As you can see we will have fine art and hand made crafts. Some of the artists this year are Trina Merry, Yvette McIntyre, Sachiko Campe, Phillip Van Ornum, Jenny Whisler, Luis Chiong, Joanna Westerfeld, Celia Huddleston, Danette Darbonne, Loretta Thomas, Valerie Caveglia, Alison Brooks and others.

an exhibit curated by Orlando Somoza.

Our opening reception event is scheduled Nov 7, Saturday, 5-9pm, featuring entertainment by Groupo Folklorico Tlapalli,

Mariachi Juvenil de Hayward, balladeer, Jesus Cisneros, and D.J, Ector Berber. Activities for kids include face painting and sugar skull decorating.

Food and beverages will be available for a small donation.

Related events: We will also have two Shrine-making Classes, for families on Nov 14 and 21st from 1-3 pm provided by teacher Rena Dein. Make a collage, a diorama, or an assemblage piece that you can put on a table, hang on the wall, or wear, honoring your loved ones who have passed on, or another inspirational figure in your life, or just about anything celebrating the SPIRIT of the season - Dia De Los Muertos, that is!

Class materials that will be provided include a shrine base, and basic supplies like paper, scissors, glue and paint. There will be a few special items for sale if you'd care to embellish your creation more.

Please bring: anything special you want to use - copies of photographs (multiple copies, various sizes), small items like toys or other things that represent that person or focus to you. While you will be supplied a base to use, you may want to bring wood frame or box, a toy truck or car, etc. to allow for even more creative expression.
If you bring pictures of loved ones, make sure you use photo copies of your original photo.

Rena Dein has facilitated classes on making shrines and other art forms to adults, teens, and children. She is a Recreation Supervisor of Teens and Community Programs for the City of Premont Parks & Recreation. She has more than 20 years of professional experience in recreation and art.

1) The Sun Gallery invites you to SAVE THE DATE to our FALL FIESTA FOR THE ARTS FUNDRAISER on October 2, Friday at 5:30pm-8:30pm.

We will have dinner, live and silent auction, and entertainment by Tlapalli Ballet Folklorio.

This tour includes a 40 min. art project in our studio. Tours are $125 for up to 30 students. Summer Art Camp: We are having art camp this coming week - and still have openings.

We would like to encourage that you sponsor a child for art camp. There are so many kids out there that need something to do but whose parents are facing hard economic times. Can you join Sun Gallery's mission to help a child - art therapy! Art is great for the mind, it teaches problem solving, and helps cope with the stresses of life.

Adult Classes: We have been asked many times if we offer adult classes and we now have a teacher who would like to teach. We would like to hear from you - what type of classes you want and if Saturday mornings would be the best time. Please call us or email with your response.

FREE Sat. Art for Families - Airbrush T-shirt Day 7/11

MORE ART! WE LOVE IT! Here are some more great art pieces done at our FREE Saturday Art for Families last Saturday June 27. Students learned how to use oil pastels, paint a horse, and fish and each student also used markers to create 2D name tags in vibrant colors. Parents also participated and learned.

We would like to invite you all to our next one on Saturday, July 11, 1-3pm, when we will be airbrushing T-shirts. First you will either make your own stencil design, or bring your own or use our stencils, then you will be use them to airbrush the design onto the T-shirt. This may take some time so be sure to come on time. Remember to bring your t-shirt. If you dont have one you can do a design on poster paper. See You Soon!

Summer Art Camp & Free Saturday Art Projects

SUMMER ART CAMP STARTS IN JUNE

It's almost summer again! Have you made plans for your kids yet? We would like you to consider Sun Gallery's Summer Art Camp. This year will accept ages 5-11 for a week long fun of art camp. Camp is Monday-Friday from 9am-3pm.

We immerse the child in a holistic visual art education experience teaching them the elements of art. Students will explore with drawing and painting, creating collage, and 3D sculpture. They will learn how to use oil pastels, water color, printmaking, collaging, and other mediums. Each week is a different teacher so the experience will vary. We have seven sessions available (subject to cancellation if not enough students). Student brings a lunch and we provide a snack and water. We also do games, and view the gallery art exhibit (Sessions 4-7 only).

Tuitition is $225.00 for one week of camp. A 10% discount on each child if more than one sibbling comes. Refund only if camp is cancelled. We accept checks, cash or credit card.

BAY AREA COLLEGE BEGINS JUNE 3

Come visit our new exhibit "Bay Area Collage" which starts June 3 to July 3. It is curated by Robert Magginetti from Tranquility Base and 10Ten Gallery. Here are some comments from him on the show.

Collage has been a big part of the Bay Area underground art scene for almost half a century. Collage artists such as Jess, Eric Satie, Winston Smith and Bruce Conner immediately come to mind. Today, Bay Area collage artists are better known than in the past, but are still not as well known as they should be. "Bay Area Collage," at the Sun Gallery tries to remedy this situation by showcasing nine utting edge Bay Area collage artists. The work of these artists covers a wide range of techniques and subjects which, as with all good art, requires the participation of the viewer. Meaning and narrative are often intentionally ambiguous and can only be arrived at through the viewer's knowledge, experiences and imagination so that viewers often have different interpretations of a particular collage. Indeed, this exploration of ambiguity is what drives many artist to make collages. All of this might sound like serious business, but the collages in "Bay Area Collage" often display humor and grace as well as the more serious aspects of art. Collage artist include Gianfranco Paolozzi (text and photo based collage), Richard Stutting (digital graphic collages), Elizabeth Chavoor (photomontage with tissue paper), Robert Magginetti (symbolist photomontage), Rebecca Peters (photocollages inspired by children's stories), Terenia Offenbacher (mixed media abstract collage), Al Preciado (multimedia collages exploring gender issues), Stan Askew (mail art photocollages) and Darla McKenna (surrealistic collages).

One Week of Wild Wild West Show Left

The Wild Wild West Show - is on it's last week of exhibit. If you havn't caught the show please come on down! There is even some old photos and history about the Rowell Ranch Rodeo. It's a great show for children too! There are some antique saddles and other cowboy things to see.

Community Shopping Day is an all-day shopping event dedicated to raising funds for local nonprofit organizations. By purchasing a Macy’s Community Shopping Day ticket directly from a Sun Gallery volunteer, ticket bearers will help raise funds to support The Sun Gallery’s community programs, plus enjoy exclusive 10-20% savings* at Macy’s Union Square, Valley Fair, Stanford, and Stoneridge only, $10 off one purchase of $25 or more* exciting events, special samplings from event sponsors, and the chance to win a $500 Macy’s shopping spree.

LOOK! Are we having fun at Sun Gallery! Here is a picture of one of our moms and daughter who came to do some art. How awesome! Everyone is learning something new. This past Saturday on March 14 we had about 20 people come do art together. We hope you will join us soon!

We have a special day planned for Mothers Day, May 9, Saturday. A special guest artist, named Patricia Bullitt, well know in the Berkeley area is coming to show us how to embellish a paper dress. Patricia is a storyteller, dancer, and artist. Come bring your special embelishments such as a copy of a photo of mom or someone dear, buttons, ribbons, a special card or item that can be glued to a paper dress in honor of mom.

SUMMER ART CAMP

We have our schedule for summer art camp. This year we will accept ages 5-11 for all weeks. We have some great teachers lined up for this year - two of them are returning from last year - Daniel Panko, and Vicky Haney.

Our week long summer program will immerse the child artist in a holistic visual art education experience. Program hours are 9 AM to 3 PM.

We offer:

Daily guided discussions in the gallery which encourage children to think and talk about art.
Direct hands-on experience
Curriculum that explores 2 & 3 dimensional art forms, line, color, texture and shape.
Projects include drawing, painting, bookmaking, masks, fiber art, recycled art, paper mache, and sculpture.

Your child will bring his/her own lunch each day. We will provide a healthy snack and water.

Tuition: $200.00 for one week/session per student, plus a $25 materials fee.

So now that you know how good art is for you - why not help support your local art organization - the SUN GALLERY! We are actively looking for members and volunteers to help us with our vision of offering art to children, supporting our local artists with space to show their art, and expanding our space to not only visual arts but also to theatrical and musical arts. We especially need to keep the Sun Gallery shining in Hayward so that we can give the children in our community the skills to grow.

Gallery Space Available for Rent!

Starting on Feb. 18, we will have the Ken Cook Gallery room for rent for your original artwork at $160 for four weeks with a 30% commission of any art work that you sell at the gallery. Wild, Wild West and Native American Exhibit

We will be hosting a "Wild, Wild, West and Native American Exhibit April 29 to May 23, 2009, to coincide with Castro Valley's Rowell Rodeo Days. We are putting out a call for art for Western or Native American Art of any media. The deadline is March 28. You may email photos to us, send us your website to look at photos, mail them (no returns) or come by and show them to us. There is a $50 fee which includes postcards for the show. Reception: May 2, 2009

20TH Annual Children's Book Illustrator Exhibit

The 20th Annual Children's Book Illustrator Exhibit is here! Jan. 21 to April 17, 2009. The reception for this event is Feb 28, Sat. 1-4pm. Come and meet the children's book illustrators in person!

We will feature the following illustrators:
Youshan Tang,
Carl Angel,
Dan SanSouci, David Hoobler, Felica Hoshino,
Jane Wattenberg, and student work from the children's book illustrator class of Chabot College.

Schools may take a field trip and have a hands-on art expericnce for a fee of $120 per class any time during this exhibit or any of our other exhibits. Email or call our office Wed - Friday 11-4pm.

ATTENTION FAMILIES: Come use your imagination and let your creativeness flow with all kinds of art projects. This is a day where the whole family can come together and express yourselves through visual arts. It does not matter how the project looks - the important thing is to teach your children to use the other half of their brainpower - which helps them be more creative thinkers.

WHEN: Jan 24, Sat, 1-3pm This repeats on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month. Different projects will be done each month.

Are you an artist who has some time to spare? Come help our local non-profit community gallery. We are looking for artists who can hang artwork, paint walls, do special wording or pictures on our lobby wall and outside bulletin board, janitorial work, mailings, designing invitations, gallery sit, or help with our fundraisers. If you have an idea for a show and have the knowledge to curate it, let us know.

If you are an art educator who can do Elementary School Tours for our Children's Illustrator Book Show from Jan. to April in the mornings please give us a call. This is a paid position. We also would like art educators to volunteer their time to do some free Saturday Family Art Days. Most art supplies are provided.

VOLUNTEERS ARE AWESOME!

If you are a non-profit you understand how important your volunteers are!
Two such volunteers should be recognized for their contributions. The first is Phillip Owen. He has come in once a week for over two years helping us keep the Gallery clean, set up shows, transport items for fundraisers and other events, and has used his digital photography skills to take pictures for us. We want to thank Phil for always being there for us.

The other volunteer is new to Sun Gallery but has made such an impact on the Gallery. Her name is Alison Brooks and her organizational skills have helped the Sun in organizing our permanent collection. In fact she is currently building shelves with her power tools to help shelve our collection. She has also tackled other projects at the Sun. She recently has given our art studio a face lift, has cleaned out our storages of many things that desperately needed it, and has just painted our back offices. What a powerhouse woman! We wish we could clone you.

If you would like to come help Sun Gallery as a volunteer - we would love to have you. We need people who want to work hard, and love the arts. We will continue to shine brightly with people like Phil Owen and Alison Brooks. We are so thankful for all their hard work and contributions to Sun Gallery.

Our next exhibit at Sun Gallery is going to be awesome. We are doing a tribute exhibit for our fearless firefighters in the Bay Area. We will be hanging their artwork! We will learn a lot about each firefighter by their visual expressions! It surely will be the "HOTTEST SHOW IN TOWN!"
For all those who have always wanted to meet a firefighter now is your chance! Exhibit Dates Aug 16 to Sept 5, 2008

RECEPTION FOR EXHIBIT: August 16, Saturday, from 1-7 pm.
So, have your questions ready for those firefighters and come enjoy the show and enter our raffle.

Are you A FIREFIGHTER? If so we want your artwork, or poetry. Submit your two or three dimensional creative works by CD, photos, online website, or your work can be dropped off and juried simultaneously at the Sun Galley. All artwork will be juried. If you would like to perform at the reception let us know too.
