World View: Landscape in Contemporary Art

World View:  Landscape in Contemporary Art

Works by Bay Area Artists
at the Sun Gallery

April 23rd – June 1st  2013

About the Exhibition:

Hayward’s Sun Gallery is delighted to present  “World View: Landscape in Contemporary Art,” a fabulous exhibit that will run from April 23rd to June 1st, 2013. The term “landscape” can be broadly applied to many artistic compositions and approaches. Traditionally, it describes the depiction of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests. It can also cover the representation of the urban environment and, more broadly speaking, landscape may act as a background for figurative work where the narrative of the completed artwork relies upon the interaction of the two.

This exhibition explores the dimensions and boundaries of how we experience landscapes by bringing together juried submissions from artists working in different media and across genres. By juxtaposing ideas and approaches, the exhibition creates an interactive landscape of its own in which visitors are invited to take part. Admission is free of charge.

It's our Annual Dia de Los Muertos Exhibition at the Sun Gallery!

The Sun Gallery is hosting an exhibition “Celebrando la Hermosura de la Vida” from October 10th – November 10th, 2012. This exhibition will feature works centering around the theme of Dia de los Muertos(Day of the Dead), focusing on works that capture beauty, vibrance, and celebration in memory of those who have passed on. Dia de los Muertos originates from Mexico, but is celebrated in many other parts of the world. Many works that are inspired by this holiday include strong vibrant color, skeletons, flowers, and crosses. Altars are also a part of this celebration and the Sun Gallery is thrilled to have installed altars that commemorate lost family members as a part of this exhibition. Also included is work from the very talented students of Mount Eden High School who have created artwork featuring skeletons for the event.

Opening Reception November 3, 2012 | 1:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. in conjunction
with the Día de los Muertos Exhibit Reception

Sun Gallery, 1015 E Street, Hayward, CA 94541

Contact: Deborah Griffin at 510-435-3806 | dg@deborahgriffin.com
or Leah Virsik at 510-418-9383 | leah@leahvirsik.com

In this exhibit, Convergence & Divergence, Leah and Deborah bring together
their distinct and individual imagery and in the juxtaposition discover
areas that overlap in textures, shapes, colors and the medium of collage.
The works diverge in elements of realism and abstraction and medium. Leah
uses three dimensional sculpture and the book arts, and Deborah composes
digital imagery and archetypal characters in surrealistic environments. You
will observe found materials and deliberately upcycled items in Leah¹s work,
yet both use vintage materials, personal mementos and ephemera to create
their vision. The exhibit has an overall continuity and invites the viewer¹s
participation in seeking the likenesses and differences as the artists
examine memory and its underlying influence on their artistic creations.

The Sun Gallery is proud to host “A Thread Runs Through It”, an exhibition that explores how material, thread and yarn can become the base elements of contemporary artwork.
This can mean many things and take many different forms. This exhibition features a wonderful quilt imagined and facilitated by Cal State East Bay student Adelina Tancioco. Through this project, a workshop was facilitated with four non-profit organizations that focus on recovery and the mental health of local women. This workshop provided a space for discussion of their healing processes as well as materials and support in making their quilt panel. Through the quilt, the participants were acknowledged for the healing that they have begun as well as valued for their experience. Furthermore, the quilt was an opportunity for the participants to share their story of healing in an effort to bring awareness to the community about the importance of mental health wellness and reduce the stigma attached to mental health illnesses. After the completion of the four quilting workshops, the quilt was sewn together, and will be touring the city of Hayward, California from July to October. The Sun Gallery is the first stop for the quilt.
I addition to the quilt we have wonderful sewn and woven objects, including “Earthsong”, a mixed-media book by Jone Manoogian and Carmela Rizzuto which addresses the need for awareness of the earth’s fragility and for preservation of its resources. Image below: Shelley Gardner, Mixed Media
